Editor's Note
This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Tiles for Victoria & Albert Museum”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.
Royal Tichelaar Makkum has been commissioned to supply tiles for the floor, wall, and roof of the courtyard and café of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The "Exhibition Road Building Project" will create a major new entrance to the museum, a courtyard, and additional gallery space for temporary exhibitions.
With the new entrance, courtyard, and specially built underground gallery for temporary exhibitions, the Exhibition Road project will showcase the best of modern design. Royal Tichelaar Makkum has been asked by the renowned London-based architecture firm AL_A to develop and supply porcelain tiles for the courtyard floor and the café roof. This will be the first courtyard in the United Kingdom to be tiled with porcelain tiles. This material choice specifically responds to the structure of the original building and the collections, which include numerous striking examples of 19th-century decorated ceramics. The courtyard will serve as a space for installations and events and will be served by a glass-fronted café.
The new spaces will open to the public in early 2017.
