Euroarce, Spain’s Leading Clay Producer, to Double Ceramic Reserves with Mine Expansion in Aragon

CASTELLÓ. Euroarce, one of the main national suppliers of clay to the ceramic industry of Castellón, is promoting a new expansion of one of its mines in Aragon -La Dehesa-, which will double its clay reserves and ensure the supply of this raw material to the tile sector for 15 years.

According to the company, which belongs to the Aragonese group SAMCA, the General Directorate of Energy and Mines published last Monday in the Official Gazette of Aragon the approval of the new project for the La Dehesa mine, located in the Teruel municipalities of Crivillén, Gargallo and Estercuel. The project contemplates an expansion of Euroarce's current white clay operation.

La Dehesa is currently, according to the same sources, the main clay mine for the Spanish ceramic industry, with an annual production exceeding 750,000 tons in its West Sector. The approved project involves an expansion of the surface area and does not increase production capacity, but it reinforces, Euroarce adds, the clay reserves, "which ensures the continuity of a fundamental supply for the ceramic industry." This action, according to the company, provides a natural and orderly continuity to the operation, as the start of the expansion in the East Sector will occur while work and restoration in the other area of the mine are still being finalized.

The work plan for the activity contemplates maintaining stable production with current extraction figures, "thus maintaining the commitment to employment in the region," according to the company. The long-term vision of Euroarce has led to planning for the East Sector of La Dehesa to produce up to 850,000 tons annually for 15 or 20 years, adapting to the predictable demand from tile and ceramic flooring manufacturers.

Furthermore, the initiative includes a complete restoration plan and an environmental monitoring plan in accordance with the environmental impact statement approved in July 2025. Mineral extraction will be carried out with measures to protect water, biodiversity, and archaeological heritage.

In addition to La Dehesa, which supplies the production plant in Gargallo, Euroarce also operates another plant in Ariño, Teruel, which processes minerals from other mines in the municipalities of Ariño, Oliete, Rillo, Huesa and Castellote.

The operations of Euroarce, recognized as a project of regional interest by the Government of Aragon since 2019, provide direct employment to almost a hundred professionals in the province of Teruel and generate another 300 indirectly. Furthermore, recognizing the value of mining in relation to the territory, strategic alliances are developed with different public administrations through the SAMCA Foundation for sociocultural purposes.

Euroarce operates fifteen mines located in different towns in Teruel, Segovia, Zamora, Cuenca and Lugo, where various base minerals are extracted and valorized. It also has four industrial plants that process these and other minerals in L'Alcora, Onda and Cabanes, and a fifth in Civita Castellana (Italy).
