This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Grottaglie Hosts the 33rd Edition of the “Medite”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.
From July 4 to October 18, 2026, Grottaglie will host the 33rd edition of the "Mediterraneo" Contemporary Ceramics Competition, an international event dedicated to artistic research in ceramics and one of the most established events in the sector.
Established in 1971, the competition confirms the city's role as a reference center for contemporary ceramics, capable of combining artisanal tradition with artistic experimentation in constant dialogue with artists from around the world.
Among the main innovations of the 2026 edition is the introduction of the "Grande Opera" section, dedicated to sculptural and installation works designed for urban spaces. The initiative aims to strengthen the relationship between art and the city, promoting works that can impact the urban context and public landscape.
The prize system includes a main award of €5,000 with the acquisition of the winning work into the collection of the Ceramics Museum, a €2,000 prize dedicated to a solo exhibition in the next edition, and a €1,000 prize for an artist residency for those under 35. The "Grande Opera" section is awarded a prize of €10,000.
The opening and award ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 4 at 6:30 PM at Castello Episcopio, marking the official start of the event.
With this edition, Grottaglie further consolidates its position in the international contemporary ceramics landscape, strengthening its identity as a laboratory city of the Mediterranean.
