Hong Kong Customs has seized 60 tons of counterfeit tile adhesive and arrested one man and one woman.
Hong Kong Wen Wei Po (Reporter Wang Xi) — Customs received a report that a building materials supplier was suspected of selling counterfeit tile adhesive. The counterfeit product, packaged in 25 kg bags, retailed at HKD 83, which is 20–30% cheaper than the genuine product. After an in-depth investigation, with the assistance of the trademark holder, Customs quickly identified the supplier's pickup point at the Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area and its office in Kwun Tong within two weeks. After a successful test purchase, enforcement action was taken this morning, resulting in the arrest of one man and one woman and the seizure of 2,400 bags of counterfeit tile adhesive, totaling 60 tons, with a market value exceeding HKD 200,000. Due to technical and cost factors, the counterfeit products have relatively crude packaging, with brighter colors than the genuine product, and differences in the font and spacing of the spray codes.
The arrested individuals, a man aged 50 and a woman aged 55, are a company supervisor and an employee, respectively. They are suspected of violating the Trade Descriptions Ordinance. The case is still under investigation, and further arrests are not ruled out. Commander Wu Ka-chun of the General Investigation Group of the Customs Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau briefed the case, stating that the building materials supplier primarily promoted and operated its business through a website, and arranged for customers to meet at the pickup point at the Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area for payment and delivery of the counterfeit tile adhesive. The counterfeit tile adhesive is mainly used for tiling ceilings, walls, and floors. The market retail price of a genuine bag of tile adhesive is approximately HKD 100 to 150, while the counterfeit is sold at about HKD 83. Wu said, 'We believe that if the public remains vigilant and cautious, they should be able to distinguish genuine products from counterfeits. If in doubt, they should first consult the trademark holder or agent.'
Wu Ka-chun (center) believes that this operation has successfully intercepted a batch of counterfeit goods from entering the market.
Customs has arranged for samples of the seized tile adhesive to be sent to the Government Laboratory and a professional testing center for preliminary testing, to check whether the adhesive strength and volatile substances such as formaldehyde meet standards. Wu emphasized, 'Combating counterfeit goods and protecting consumer safety has always been one of Customs' top priorities. Customs believes that this operation has successfully intercepted a batch of counterfeit goods from entering the market.'
