This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “When Marble, Oak, and Zellige Elevate a Basque H”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.
In Guéthary, a century-old house is reborn thanks to a meticulous choice of materials—oak, marble, zellige—and close collaboration with artisans from the Southwest. A guided tour of a refined project by Aurore Dehez-Benac.
"We used very beautiful materials, starting with the existing oak parquet floor that we were able to salvage," says the architect. Marble is also very present in the bathrooms, particularly in the largest bedroom.
The headboard was covered in marble, marble that is also found in this bedroom’s bathroom with the oversized basin installed facing the window.
Aurore Dehez-Benac details this before adding, "We work primarily with local artisans like the Bousquet marble workshop in Bayonne or BIM joinery in Biriatou."
For the zellige, another material used in the bathrooms (and not only there), the interior designer called upon Ateliers Zelij in Toulouse.
They are capable of creating zellige in the color we want, which makes them absolutely unique pieces.
Oak in the Living Spaces
We were fortunate to be able to salvage the existing parquet floor, which we paired with wooden furniture pieces from Alki and Ondarreta. The existing fireplace was, for its part, redesigned in a more contemporary style and covered with Carrara marble.
Aurore Dehez-Benac details this.
A Bedroom and Bathrooms in Zellige
In one of the bedrooms, we used zellige, already present in the bathroom, on the headboard.

A Quartz Countertop
In the kitchen, the double countertop measures 3.70 m, it is in quartz while the tabletop is in marble.

A Suite Under the Sign of Marble
In the largest bedroom,
we created a headboard covered in marble, a material we find again in the bathroom with the oversized basin.
She continues. A Carrara marble basin is installed facing the windows.
