Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Rebranding: Homebuilder Tamarack Launches New Sh”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

Homebuilder Tamarack Homes has opened new show homes at two of its Ottawa developments, Findlay Creek Village and Meadows, as part of a rebranding effort that has drawn widespread attention.

Megan Van Rijt, the company's sales manager, said the adjustments coincide with a leadership transition at Tamarack. Last fall, Michelle Taggart and Steve Parkes took over as co-presidents from their predecessors, marking the third generation of family leadership. Van Rijt and marketing manager Christie Shayler are also newly appointed executives, bringing fresh energy to the long-established builder.

Although the show homes were planned before the leadership handover, it was the new team that saw them through to completion.

"It's a really exciting time for everyone," Shayler said, citing changes to the Tamarack brand and logo, upgrades to sales centers in Ottawa and Kingston, and the introduction of new home models. "We are in a growth phase."

Show Homes in Findlay Creek

In the Findlay Creek Village community in south Ottawa, four new townhouse show homes have been added to the existing four detached show homes, designed by interior designer Sarah Taggart. They replace four townhouse show homes that opened in 2022.

The popularity of townhouses and shifting buyer preferences led to the introduction of new townhouse models in the community. Van Rijt noted that the existing detached show homes have held up well and needed no renovation, saying, "You can't tell they were built four years ago."

The four new townhouse show homes represent Tamarack's most popular models: two end units (Harmony and Camden), the smallest model (Abbey), and a middle unit with a mudroom (Samira).

"We wanted them to be classic, fresh, vibrant, and attainable, meaning people can walk in and not feel like they can't afford it because of too many upgrades, or that the sofa doesn't look comfortable," Van Rijt said.

Shayler said the show homes are also designed to let buyers see how the homes look with different upgrade levels. For example, the Harmony show home features the most upgrades for reference, while subsequent show homes have progressively fewer. Van Rijt added that the smallest show home, the Abbey model, has almost no upgrades, aiming to show first-time buyers the quality they can get at a lower price.

"The townhouse show homes opened in February, and the feedback has been very positive. People love the models and designs, and they're happy to see all the options available," Shayler said.

Van Rijt said the target buyers for these homes are first-time buyers, professionals, and young families, who are also the main purchasers.

Key features of Tamarack townhouses, reflected in the show homes, include finished basements, 9-foot ceilings on the main floor, quartz countertops, hardwood floors on the main floor, heat recovery ventilators, and smooth ceilings. Van Rijt said the homes are also Energy Star certified, allowing buyers to apply for a 35-year green mortgage through RBC.

Findlay Creek Village, launched in 2002, now has about 3,800 homes built by Tamarack and its sister company Tartan Homes, with about 500 more to be built.

Show Homes in Meadows

In the Meadows community in Ottawa's Barrhaven area, which has been under development for 15 years, two new detached show homes have revitalized the sales center.

The St. James model, on a 44-foot-wide lot, is one of Tamarack's largest and best-selling models. The show home showcases options such as a main-floor guest suite (a design increasingly favored by builders) and a finished basement with a bedroom and bathroom, allowing the home to have six bedrooms. With the finished basement, the living area reaches 4,300 square feet. "It's a big, beautiful home," Van Rijt said.

Designed by Anna Riopelle, who works for both Tamarack and Tartan, the model blends traditional elements with modern farmhouse style. She said she prioritized comfort, natural light, and a simpler aesthetic.

The other model is the Payton II on a 38-foot-wide lot, a four-bedroom home just over 3,100 square feet. While it can be optioned with a main-floor guest suite, the show home displays the standard layout, featuring a living room (complementing a large family room at the rear), a powder room, and a larger mudroom instead of the guest suite.

Like the townhouses, these detached homes are Energy Star certified. They also include features such as higher basement ceilings, walk-in closets in the mudroom, double sinks in the ensuite bathroom, 9-foot ceilings on the main floor, gas fireplaces, heat recovery ventilators, smooth ceilings, quartz countertops, and hardwood floors on the main floor.

Sales for new homes in the Meadows community began on April 25. Van Rijt said the community, launched in 2011, has about 900 of its planned 1,100 homes built.

Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Save Half Your Renovation Budget! These ‘Alterna”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

Dreaming of a high-quality, beautiful home but worried about blowing your budget? In reality, by knowing how to use alternative building materials, you can not only keep costs down but also create aesthetics and functionality that exceed expectations. This guide compiles essential tips for novice renovators, covering budget allocation, material selection, application in different spaces, construction details, and procurement and acceptance procedures, helping you save money and secure a high-quality home with peace of mind.

I. Budget Control Relies Entirely on ‘Alternative Building Materials’

1. Renovation Budget Allocation: Flooring, Walls, Ceilings The key to a renovation budget is proper allocation: 60-65% for design and renovation (flooring, walls, and ceilings being the major items), 15% each for appliances and furniture, and 5-10% left for decorative details. Flooring and walls cover the largest area, so prioritizing these large surfaces maximizes overall quality. Also, consider what you 'need' versus what you 'want', and use ready-made furniture to reduce carpentry costs. 2. High Cost-Performance Material Selection Principles: Aesthetics + Durability + Easy Maintenance When selecting materials, first consider durability and ease of cleaning. Choose moisture-resistant materials for damp spaces, and ensure thorough waterproofing, especially in old house renovations. Alternative materials with design features are not only versatile in appearance but also waterproof, scratch-resistant, easy to maintain, and affordable. Avoiding constant repairs is true savings. 3. Cost Comparison: Traditional vs. Alternative Materials For flooring, solid wood offers great texture but is expensive and susceptible to moisture. SPC stone plastic composite flooring or laminate wood flooring is waterproof, scratch-resistant, and saves significantly on budget. Marble is luxurious, but creating a single wall can cost nearly NT$100,000. A large-format porcelain slab imitating marble costs about NT$20,000-30,000, with a similarly grand finished effect. With quality on one hand and budget savings on the other, alternative materials truly make a difference. Image provided by Rizhe Design, click to view project details.

II. Comprehensive Analysis of Common High-Quality Alternative Building Materials

1. Flooring: Laminate Wood Flooring, SPC Stone Plastic Composite Flooring, Stone-Look Tiles Traditional solid wood flooring is beautiful but requires tedious maintenance and is prone to insects and deformation. Many now choose laminate wood flooring, which is scratch-resistant, dirt-resistant, and affordable. SPC stone plastic composite flooring emphasizes waterproofing, making it suitable for homes with pets or damp environments. Wood-look or stone-look tiles are waterproof, easy to clean, and suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. 2. Walls: Imitation Exposed Concrete Coating, PVC Printed Panels, Slatted Wood Panels Want an 'industrial style' wall with exposed concrete but find it expensive? Try an imitation exposed concrete special coating, which offers texture and durability. PVC printed panels easily change styles and are moisture-resistant and easy to clean. Slatted wood panels add layers of texture, creating a warm and modern feel. 3. Ceilings: Light-Gauge Steel Wood-Grain Panels, Fire-Resistant Gypsum Board If you don't need complex ceiling designs, light-gauge steel wood-grain panels or fire-resistant gypsum boards are lightweight, easy to install, offer soundproofing and fire resistance, and are competitively priced. 4. Doors/Cabinets: Particleboard, PU Door Panels, Glass Decorative Doors

article image

For doors and cabinets, using particleboard, PU door panels, or craft glass decorative doors offers a wide variety of colors and styles, relatively affordable prices, moisture resistance, easy maintenance, and great design flexibility, significantly enhancing the space's refinement. III. Space-Specific Application Suggestions

1. Living Room: Marble Alternatives, Open Slatted Design For the TV wall or main wall, use large-format porcelain slabs with marble-like veining for an imposing look that rivals real stone while saving costs. Pair with wooden slats for partial partitions or decorative cabinets for a modern and open feel. 2. Kitchen: Fire-Resistant Laminate, Durable Tiles Use fire-resistant laminate for kitchen walls; it's attractive and easy to clean. For countertops or backsplashes, consider thin porcelain slabs or artificial stone, which are heat-resistant and prevent stain penetration, making daily maintenance simple and worry-free. 3. Bathroom: Waterproof PVC Wall Panels, Seamless Flooring Use waterproof PVC wall panels or seamless waterproof coatings in the bathroom to prevent moisture intrusion and extend lifespan. For flooring, choose slip-resistant seamless tiles or stone-look materials for comfort and safety. 4. Bedroom: Wood-Look Wall Panels, Functional Cabinet Materials For a warm and easy-to-maintain bedroom, use wood-look coating on walls and system panels for wardrobes or storage cabinets, combining style and practicality. For cabinet doors, consider MDF or particleboard for color flexibility and lower cost.

IV. Key Construction Details

1. Key Installation Methods for Alternative Materials Although alternative materials are cheap and beautiful, always consult professional craftsmen. Correct installation methods ensure longevity. Large-format porcelain slabs require a solid base installation with no voids. For wood flooring, ensure the subfloor is level and joints are finished meticulously. 2. Different Approaches for Renovations vs. New Homes New homes have complete electrical and plumbing infrastructure, allowing for targeted renovations. Old houses require priority checks on electrical, plumbing, and waterproofing, with sufficient budget allocated for foundational work.

地板類型比較表格圖

3. Joint, Trim, and Edge Finishing Solutions Joints and edges can easily reveal flaws. Use expansion joints and trim strips to hide boundaries. Curved or partial edge finishing avoids sharp corners and adds design flair, but note that curved designs may increase labor costs. 4. Material and Color Matching Proposals Don't want to stick with white? Pair walls with latte tones or imitation exposed concrete gray, combined with wood or stone textures, to instantly create a warm and upscale feel. Large stone-look panels paired with warm wooden cabinets achieve a modern, minimalist look without feeling cold. V. Key Points for Procurement and Acceptance of Alternative Materials

1. Recommended Local Brands in Taiwan Prioritize reputable local brands or building material suppliers. Inquire about warranties and response times for better renovation assurance. Many online services offer one-stop in-home measurement and brand recommendations. 2. Essential Preparation for Procurement Specifications and On-Site Measurement Measure yourself or have a designer confirm specifications on-site to ensure correct dimensions and avoid material waste. Reserve space for processing and edge finishing. 3. Inspecting Texture, Durability, and Certification Marks Touch and feel the texture in person. Check for color differences, chips, and manufacturing dates. Choose products with certifications for fire resistance, moisture resistance, or low formaldehyde to ensure health and safety. 4. Contract Details and Acceptance Process Ensure all selected materials, brands, models, quantities, and origins are listed in the contract. Check each item upon delivery, conduct on-site acceptance, and take photos for documentation. This provides evidence for any future issues. Overall, mastering the use and acceptance techniques of alternative materials allows even budget-conscious renovators to become experts! Communicate thoroughly with your designer or contractor, ask questions when unsure, and research actual products and brand information. Experiencing materials firsthand is most accurate. With the right methods and spending wisely, you can achieve a high-quality, beautiful home even on a limited budget!

Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Taiwan’s First Seven-Star Stone Gallery: ‘Jia Li”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

Taiwan's first seven-star stone gallery, the 'Jia Lian Luxury Stone Gallery,' has opened. (Photo/searchome design) A wave of luxurious stone styles is sweeping global living spaces. So-called 'luxury stones' are mostly granite, crystal, mica, agate, and quartzite, often containing precious metals like crystal formations. They frequently feature stones interwoven with colored crystals, titanium-gold threads, agate, and jade, earning them the nickname 'semi-precious stones.' Luxury stones are hard and have a low extraction rate. Whether used for entrance walls, floors, countertops, or even furniture materials, they greatly test one's mastery of stone properties and processing capabilities. Jia Lian Stone Industry, the most influential player in Taiwan's building materials sector, boasts 45 years of deep heritage. It operates the largest stone exhibition centers in northern and western Taiwan and is the leading importer of stone in the country. In 2022, Jia Lian entered the high-end luxury stone market, building Taiwan's first and largest high-end stone appreciation club, the 'Jia Lian Luxury Stone Gallery,' on the Bali waterfront in Taipei. Covering 1,000 ping (approx. 3,300 sqm), it features a comprehensive sample wall, a 3-meter-wide circulation plan, and custom dimmable LED lighting, allowing visitors to appreciate the delicate nature of the stone under optimal light and color temperature. The gallery aims to open up endless possibilities for dialogue between customers and stone art in the space. Pioneer of First-Hand Stone Information

Jia Lian Stone Industry has service points across Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung, and Hualien, and operates the largest stone exhibition centers in northern and western Taiwan. The brand sources over 600 beautiful natural stones from around the world, including partnerships with more than ten mining areas in Italy, Brazil, Turkey, Portugal, Morocco, Indonesia, India, Greece, and Iran. It leads the industry in both inventory and variety of stones, and is one of the few import stone suppliers in Taiwan capable of supplying large-scale construction projects. It is renowned as the best partner for real estate and construction engineering, ranking among the top five specialized import stone brands in Taiwan. It has also received recognition from the internationally renowned Italian stone giant Antolini, which specializes in the European and American markets, securing first-hand rare luxury stones from world-class mining areas, further solidifying Jia Lian's unshakable leadership position. Founder Chiu Chih-Lung and second-generation leader Chiu Yu-Chia, with their world-class vision, turn stone into gold, creating an astonishing import capacity equivalent to building 53 FIFA World Cup football fields annually. They are considered the benchmark stone supply experts in Taiwan. Amid the global wave of luxury stone applications in interior spaces, Jia Lian is the only company in Taiwan to master first-hand international stone intelligence, becoming the most authoritative introducer and trendsetter for rare luxury stones. Celebrating its anniversary, the company has made a major announcement to enter the high-end luxury stone market, building Taiwan's first and largest high-end stone appreciation club, the 'Jia Lian Luxury Stone Gallery,' on the Bali waterfront. Named 'Artist of the Earth,' it shines brightly, surpassing gallery aesthetics, crossing new boundaries in stone art, and taking you through time to glimpse the immortal masterpieces forged over hundreds of millions of years.

Originally from Limoges, the sculptor presents her exhibition "Côté Céramique" from April 27 to May 3. The artist unveils a universe where porcelain and stoneware blend with glass, wood, or sand, in a constant dialogue with the material.

Sculptor and ceramist Valérie Rousset Blondy exhibits from April 27 to May 3 at the Maggy-Martel space. Originally from Limoges, the artist shares her heart, she says, "between the city dedicated to the art of porcelain and Charente-Maritime, my source of inspiration. I love ceramics of yesterday and today. Accompanying my parents in their passion for treasure hunting has undoubtedly developed in me a very special relationship with objects."

Eloquent about her art, she states: "I love its aesthetics, as well as its life journey, its fabrication, its function, its history—all these things that give me many emotions and that I try to transcribe into my pieces. I like to mix with clay (porcelain or stoneware) other materials like glass, wood, sand, the plant or mineral world; I impose no limit on my imagination, but the material sometimes does, so I adapt to it." She also admits to repurposing old objects so they bring their history to contemporary creation.

Hands in the Clay

"As a young person, I was sensitized to porcelain and stoneware by my family. My story and my life led me one day to plunge my hands into the clay. Encouraged by my loved ones, my friends, my encounters, I found the joyful energy that pushes one forward. Influenced by nature, material, sky, the teeming life around us, my eyes then decided to accompany my hands."

Valérie Rousset Blondy creates and generously shares her art. She enjoys showcasing her work and exchanging with visitors during her exhibitions. "Humanity has a big place in my life, and making beautiful encounters fills me with happiness. Creation and the relationship with others fulfill me and make my life more beautiful," she concludes.

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Forget Wood and Quartz: This Indestructible Mate”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

The kitchen today is far more than just a space for preparing meals; it is the vibrant heart of the home, the place for exchange, inspiration, and conviviality. Yet, when rethinking this central room this spring, a thorny question inevitably arises: how to find the perfect surface that combines elegance with unyielding resistance? For a long time, a few favorites dominated the market. But trends evolve quickly. Forget everything you thought you knew about high-end surfaces, because the true star of interior design is completely reshuffling the deck.

The Twilight of Traditional Materials in the Face of a New Kitchen Giant

For decades, natural elegance attracted all the attention. Kitchens proudly displayed large warm surfaces or smooth mineral finishes for a chic, modern look. However, design alone is no longer enough for a dynamic home. The demands of contemporary living require far superior performance that appearance alone cannot provide.

The Unspoken Fragility of Your Old Countertops Exposed

Solid wood, despite its unmatched authenticity, requires rigorous maintenance. It marks easily, fears humidity, and needs regular sanding and oiling. Quartz, long adored for its sophisticated style, harbors a major Achilles' heel: its low tolerance for extreme heat. A forgotten hot pot for just a few seconds can leave a stubborn mark, caused by the resins it contains. Faced with these constraints imposed by daily life, the need for a more performant alternative became essential.

The Secret Finally Revealed of This Innovative Ceramic That Sweeps All Votes in 2026

This is where the true revelation of the season comes in. The surface that renders classics obsolete is large-format ceramic (often known under ranges like Dekton or Neolith). Made from a mixture of extremely fine minerals heated to volcanic temperatures and pressed with colossal force, this cutting-edge material becomes virtually indestructible. It perfectly reproduces the texture of marble, stone, or even raw concrete, while wiping away all their flaws with a wave of the hand.

A Formidable Shield That Defies the Laws of Physics at the Stove

The cooking area is a theater of perilous operations involving sharp objects, staining liquids, and intense heat. It is precisely in this organized chaos that technical ceramic unleashes its full potential, almost resembling real armor. Place Your Hot Pans Without the Slightest Hesitation or Damage

The main advantage of this latest-generation surface lies in its exceptional thermal resistance. It is finally possible to remove an oven tray or a boiling pot from the heat and place it directly on the surface, without any trivet. No discoloration, no cracks, and no deformation will mar the surface, even in the face of sudden thermal shock. Sharp Blades and Stubborn Liquids Glide Over This Totally Impermeable Armor Another feat? Its incredible hardness. Cutting a lemon, slicing bread, or chopping vegetables directly on the counter without using a cutting board is no longer an act of sabotage. A knife blade will dull long before it can scratch such a surface. Moreover, its structure prevents classic culinary accidents: spilled red wine, turmeric, or coffee will leave absolutely no indelible stains.

The Perfect Alliance Between Avant-Garde Aesthetics and Absolute Serenity in Daily Life

While its technical capabilities are stunning, this material makes no compromise on elegance. Manufacturers now offer XXL formats that allow for spectacular central islands, free of the unsightly joints that break visual lines. Matte, textured, ultra-glossy finishes… the illusion of pure natural stone is sublime, elevating design to an exceptional level.

Say Goodbye to Strenuous Cleaning Chores Thanks to a Non-Porous Barrier

Near-zero porosity is the key to a perfectly healthy environment. Bacteria and dirt cannot infiltrate or proliferate within the cabinet. Gone are expensive chemicals and prolonged washing routines: a simple wipe with a damp sponge and a little mild soap is enough to leave the culinary creation space immaculate for the next use.

The Final Verdict on This Robust Revolution That Combines Warmth, Cleanliness, and Design to Redefine the Home of Tomorrow

By overturning standards, large-format ceramic has imposed a new norm in the art of living. More than a work surface, it is a lasting investment that enhances light, withstands the shocks of daily life, and frees the mind from material constraints. It is the very essence of innovation in the service of domestic well-being. Renovating and furnishing your interior requires long-term thinking. By choosing intelligent and indestructible materials, serenity finally settles durably into the room where the heart of the home beats. As you prepare the first large gatherings of the warm season, are you ready to completely rethink the epicenter of your receptions?

Business News The 6 Best Materials for Kitchen Countertops, According to Consumer Reports You'll want to choose carefully when redoing your countertops, especially if you hope they'll last a long time. By Quartz Staff Published 8 hours ago If you're renovating your kitchen, choosing the right countertop is important. The material you choose affects both the look of your kitchen and its resistance to daily use. Consumer Reports has tested popular countertop materials to see how they resist stains, cuts, heat, scratches, and dropped objects. They combined these results into an overall score. Here are the six best materials, each offering a balance of durability, performance, and value at different price points. Read on to find out which materials made the list.

#6: Ultracompact (Dekton)

文章相关图片

Price: $50–$100 per square foot Ultracompact countertops score perfectly for stain resistance, cutting, and heat, but their lower impact score hurts their overall ranking. They also score slightly lower for abrasion, placing them behind some more forgiving materials.

#5: Tile (Ceramic and Porcelain)

Price: $5–$20 per square foot Tile countertops resist cuts and heat very well, but perform less well in terms of stain and impact resistance. Their varied durability results place them in the middle of Consumer Reports' ranking, though they are a much more affordable option than others on the list.

#4: Laminate

Price: $5–$25 per square foot Laminate stands out for excellent stain and heat resistance, but performs less well in terms of cutting and abrasion. Its relatively high impact score helps compensate for some of these weaknesses, as does its typical cost.

#3: Recycled Glass (Penetrating Sealant)

文章相关图片

Price: $25–$100 per square foot Recycled glass scores high for cutting, heat resistance, and abrasion, but lower results for stains and impacts bring down its overall score. Consumer Reports' tests show it is durable in many areas, but not all.

#2: Granite

Price: $20–$60 per square foot Granite gets top marks for cutting, heat resistance, and abrasion, with good stain resistance as well. Its lower impact score is the main factor keeping it from the top spot.

#1: Quartz (Engineered Stone)

Price: $20–$60 per square foot We're not saying this because it's the name of our publication. Quartz comes out on top thanks to its strong performance in nearly all tests, including excellent resistance to cutting, heat, and abrasion, as well as very good stain resistance. Consumer Reports determined it offers the most comprehensive durability of all materials tested.

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Iris Ceramica Group Transforms Historic Chapel f”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

Iris Ceramica Group is participating in Casa Decor 2026 with an intervention that highlights the expressive potential of ceramics in the architectural and interior design fields. From April 9 to May 24, the company is dressing the deconsecrated former chapel of the palace hosting the exhibition, located in the Barrio de las Letras, transforming the space into a contemporary aesthetic restaurant that dialogues with the historical context. The project, signed by Raúl Martins, articulates a balance between tradition and modernity, integrating ceramic surfaces into the original architectural framework and extending their presence to other spaces along the exhibition route. For this edition of Casa Decor 2026, Iris Ceramica Group presents an architectural project that highlights the expressive capacity of ceramics, a material where history and innovation coexist, and which generates a dialogue between architecture and interior design, as well as between tradition and contemporary taste. The contribution of Sapienstone surfaces, an Iris Ceramica Group brand distributed in Spain by Cupa Stone, is also notable. They are used in the furniture elements intended for visitor service. The bar area desk and the kitchen desk have been made with Jatoba Brown 4D Lapped surfaces in 20 mm and Calacatta Aureo 4D with Cashmere finish in 12 mm, respectively.

Other Surfaces Along the Exhibition Route

Beyond the 'The Silent Chapel' space, the Group's surfaces are present in other environments along the Casa Decor 2026 exhibition route, configuring an extended narrative through different contexts and design languages. In the 'Órbita y Materia' space, Sapienstone's Fior di Viola surfaces are used on the nightstands and the flooring, defining the project's material palette. The composition is completed with Alpi Chiaro Venato Polished from the brand. For the Bauhaus space, two Sapienstone surfaces structure the chromatic proposal: Fior di Viola 4D with Cashmere finish on the countertop and Marsala Red Natural on the sink, elevating the kitchen from its practical function towards a reading as an architectural element of the space. For Mapei, Sapienstone's Breccia Imperiale Natural is used on the central table surface and interior claddings, establishing material continuity between horizontal and vertical planes. The full-height decorative panels in Patagonia from the brand are also featured.

Application of Iris Ceramica Group and Sapienstone Surfaces

En la propuesta, el pasado y el presente conviven a través de las superficies cerámicas de la firma y articulan una combinación de formas y patrones...

THE SILENT CHAPEL – IRIS CERAMICA GROUP SPACE Sapienstone – Jatoba Brown 4D Lapped 20mm Sapienstone – Calacatta Aureo 4D Cashmere 12mm The firm's participation highlights the role of ceramics in the dialogue between architecture and interior design. Interior designer Raúl Martins, author of the project, has transformed the deconsecrated former chapel of the historic palace on Calle San Agustín into a restaurant dining room, with an approach that respects the identity of the space while proposing a contemporary and traditional reading simultaneously. Ceramics are integrated as a 'custom' element, both in the design of architectural claddings and in the furniture specifically made for the project, in combination with wood worked artisanally by the technical partner Mogno Woods, a Galician cabinetmaker who integrates the natural material in dialogue with ceramics.

‘The Silent Chapel’

The palace hosting the new edition of Casa Decor was built between 1892 and 1895 as the residence of the Marquises of Vélez and Counts of Niebla, following the architectural language typical of urban residences of the time. In 1926, after a change of ownership, the building was adapted for use as a school-convent, at which time the former coach houses were transformed into a place of worship. The chapel, now deconsecrated, is one of the most unique spaces in the complex, both for its Spanish Neo-Renaissance style and for the large glazed skylight that allows natural light to enter and creates an intimate and welcoming atmosphere. With a rectangular floor plan of 164 square meters and particularly enveloping spatial conditions, the enclosure is conceived as an ideal environment to house a restaurant dining room. In this context, the use of the company's ceramic surfaces, selected in their most classic aesthetics, provides a new reading of the space, which does not alter or replace the original architecture, but integrates respectfully, establishing a dialogue between the history of the place and the contemporary intervention. Raúl Martins's project proposes a refined language that allows the pre-existing architecture to maintain its prominence. Historical elements are preserved, while contemporary materials are incorporated as an additional layer over the original structure, redefining the space without modifying its essence. In the proposal, the past and present coexist through the firm's ceramic surfaces, of classic and natural inspiration, which articulate a combination of forms and patterns, including mosaic-type flooring, perspective games, mix & match compositions, and geometric designs.

Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Majolica Shards: Art and Earthenware at La Cigal”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

The pieces exhibited at La Cigale illustrate various traditions, including Italian and Japanese. According to Wikipedia, majolica experienced a golden age in Italy between the 15th and 16th centuries. A Japanese piece from the Meiji era illustrates another facet, often in polylobed porcelain. According to the inventory description, a Meiji plate features blue cobalt and coral decoration, with a diameter of thirty-one centimeters. Within the exhibition, the Meiji plate illustrates the encounter between Asian craftsmanship and European taste. According to Pointe-à-Callière, the object shows slight traces of wear visible in the inventory photos. A curator relates having placed the piece back in a display case protected against UV light and humidity. This gesture shows the importance of preserving the glazes and colors. The fabrication combines clay, tin glaze, and metal oxides for the decoration. According to specialized sources, this technique originated near Baghdad in the 8th century before spreading. A comparative table synthesizes characteristics and origins, useful for curators and collectors. This perspective helps distinguish imitation from authentic production.

The exhibition "Chevaliers" in Nantes at the Château des Ducs de Bretagne runs until April 20, 2025. It combines wall panels and exhibited tableware to create a coherent visual narrative. This choice also involves technical decisions on the mounting and isolation of supports.

Museum Exhibition Tips: A workshop in Milan offers custom protective glass for fragile plates. This simple measure extends the life of the pieces and facilitates public display. The presence of majolica and earthenware strongly influences the interior ambiance of La Cigale. The painted ornaments and colorful motifs animate the walls and furniture. This text examines the history, technique, and conservation of these decorative pieces. The key points follow to facilitate the reading and appreciation of the artifacts.

Key Points to Remember:

Majolica as a historical and decorative focal point in the interior. Earthenware for tableware and wall panels, with rich and varied ornamentation. Colorful and geometric motifs to rhythm the space and create identity. Preventive conservation recommended to preserve glazes, colors, and ceramics.

From the Past to Decor: Majolica and Earthenware in the Interior of La Cigale

Workshops reinterpret glazes according to local traditions and the demands of patrons. This play of variations explains the richness of the colorful motifs observed in La Cigale. Ceramic Technical Principles: Prepared and sieved earth for a fine paste. Tin glaze for an opaque white background. Painting with metal oxides for decorations. Controlled firing to fix the glazes.

Processes and Regional Variants

The processes differ by region, notably between Italy, Spain, and the British Isles. Workshops in Urbino or Montelupo produced pieces destined for Renaissance elites.

Colors and Colorful Motifs: Visual Language

The use of colors translates social preferences and artistic influences across the centuries. According to Visit Sicily, Sicilian majolicas are distinguished by vibrant palettes and arabesque motifs.

“I restored a similar plate and stabilized the micro-cracks without altering the original paste.”

Marc L.

Provenance and Exchange Routes

Exchange networks brought majolica and earthenware to colonies and grand houses. According to archaeological studies, the collection reflects commercial flows over several centuries. The reference collection comprises about two hundred and fifty objects, covering the 16th to the 19th century. The original proportions remain dominated by French, English, and Dutch pieces according to analyses.

“The visit to La Cigale transported me; the colors awakened family memories.”

Anaïs P.

With These Techniques in Mind: Conservation and Staging for La Cigale

Highlighting the pieces requires controlled lighting conditions and display cases filtering UV light. According to restorers, humidity and light remain the principal risks for the glazes. La Cigale employs filtered LED lighting, with calibrated intensity and temperature, display cases with UV filters and hygrometric control, and inert supports with reversible fixings for safety.
