New rules making it easier to import competing overseas building products have made little difference to costs so far, the construction sector says.

A year ago, the Government passed amendments to the Building Act to reduce barriers to using imported building materials.

Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk said in April 2025 that in the previous five years, the industry had faced a 40% rise in construction costs.
