A ruling by U.S. trade officials that imports of quartz-surface products are causing, or threatening to cause, serious injury to the domestic quartz industry has been criticized by a consortium of businesses that measure, cut, fabricate and install quartz surfaces for kitchens, bathrooms and other applications in the residential construction and remodeling trades.
The April decision by the U.S. International Trade Commission “puts at risk a vibrant domestic manufacturing ecosystem that supports more than 100,000 U.S. jobs in thousands of small businesses across the country, including fabricators that form the backbone of today’s U.S. quartz industry,” said the Save Quartz Coalition, which has argued that imposing tariffs or quotas on imported quartz surface products would disrupt supply chains, create shortages and increase costs for American fabricators, builders and other small businesses across the country.
“Those costs would ultimately be passed on to American families at a time when consumers are already facing rising prices and affordability is under significant strain,”
said the coalition, which urged U.S. trade officials “to carefully weigh the real-world consequences of tariffs or quotas and protect the broader domestic quartz manufacturing industry, American builders, and everyday American consumers.”
