A floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), identified as Argentina's second liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facility, is preparing to receive a new LNG cargo from Naturgy Aprovisionamientos.

The GNL Escobar (GNLE) import terminal is situated on the Parana River, approximately 30 miles outside Buenos Aires. Energia Argentina explained that this stock replenishment would allow the injection of regasified gas into the system during potential peaks in residential demand caused by lower temperatures or in the event of unforeseen failures in the natural gas transportation network.

According to Excelerate Energy, LNG has played a critical role in meeting Argentina's energy needs, offering a cleaner and cost-saving option given the country's high seasonality of natural gas consumption. Additionally, preparations are underway for a proposed LNG project in Sierra Grande Norte, on Argentina's Atlantic coast.

Naturgy secured the supply contract following an international open tender conducted on April 15, 2026. Energia Argentina awarded the LNG cargo to Naturgy after inviting 39 prequalified firms to participate, though only six companies submitted bids in the most recent round. The estimated arrival date for the LNG cargo is the second week of May, the source states.
