Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Bathroom Trends: The Boom of Large-Format Tiles”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

In the realm of interior design trendsetting, the hospitality industry often plays a pioneering role. This is also the case with bathroom tiles. Particularly in demand, both in hotels and in private residences, are large-format tile slabs, as confirmed by Anita Wolf of the Austrian Tile Association in an interview with meinbezirk.at.

“The trend continues to move towards large formats. That means really large tiles in the order of 90×90 cm or larger,” says Wolf.

Better Not to Install Them Yourself

Consumers appreciate the minimal grout lines of large-format tiles. However, the claim that this is more hygienic is not technically substantiated. "A good grout is just as hygienic as a continuous tile surface," says Wolf. For end consumers, it's important to note that large tiles should definitely be installed by a professional company. "You cannot do that yourself," emphasizes Wolf, who also works as a court-certified expert.

Base Plan Before Design

But before racking one's brains over tile design, especially when renovating existing bathrooms, one should first consult with a specialist company. "There are many technical questions to clarify, and many more norms and regulations must be observed today than was the case 20 or 30 years ago," says the expert. This primarily concerns regulations for slip resistance and accessibility. In a new build, there is more leeway for bathroom design.

Central: Plumber and Tile Installer

The be-all and end-all is the base planning. Here, the different tradespeople should coordinate in a so-called coordination meeting. "Especially the plumber and the tile installer are central to the bathroom and must work closely together," emphasizes Wolf. Once the planning is complete, one can focus on design. According to Wolf, earthy tones like beige, brown, and white remain popular. Wood-look tiles are also trending.
