Nanjing, historically known as Jinling, boasts thousands of years of civilization and is one of the cradles of Chinese culture. In this historic city rich in cultural heritage, the Jinling Art Museum, with its unique brick-and-stone exterior, skillfully blends history with modernity, becoming a vibrant and artistic urban landmark.

Designed by AZL Architects, the museum's design concept is inspired by 'Jinling Renaissance, Under the Plane Trees,' using a contemporary architectural language to narrate Nanjing's profound history and culture. The museum employs 139,000 custom-made ceramic bricks representing Nanjing's brick culture, giving the building a sculptural and artistic feel. These ceramic bricks are inspired by bricks from the late Eastern Jin Dynasty collected by the Nanjing Museum. They are uniform in size but vary in surface treatment—some are smooth glazed, others rough unglazed—adding rich layers to the building's facade, bringing ancient architectural elements into the modern era and enhancing visual interest.

The museum's exterior design is unique, featuring two rotating cubes connected by curved surfaces, creating an intriguing twisted posture. The base of the building echoes the surrounding residential structures, while the upper part twists to align with adjacent roads, engaging in a dialogue with the environment. The interaction between the rotating cubes and the square base creates a rich spatial experience both inside and out. The architectural form breaks tradition, symbolizing upward vitality and subtly resonating with Nanjing's famous tombs and their historical significance. The interior spaces are designed around light and shadow changes, providing excellent display conditions for the artworks and offering diverse visual experiences.

The ceramic bricks employ innovative construction techniques. Architects used two different fixing methods depending on the location: a U-shaped slot bolted assembly above the main entrance, and more traditional methods elsewhere. These approaches ensure safety while reflecting a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, flexibly applied as needed. Additionally, the ceramic brick curtain wall adopts a modular solution for easy on-site assembly, ensuring precision for the complex exterior and simplifying construction on both flat and curved surfaces, creating a seamless three-dimensional appearance. This museum will become an important landmark in Nanjing's urban cultural development and a new paradigm for contemporary Chinese architectural design, offering a space for people to experience history and art. It is not only a display space for artworks but also a carrier of the city's memory.
