A spokesman for the centre said that the above tuna sample was taken for testing at the import level, and the results showed that the malachite green content in the sample was 1.4 parts per billion. The centre has informed the importer involved of the violation and is tracing the source and distribution of the product.

The authorities pointed out that malachite green is an industrial dye used to treat fish diseases. Currently, many countries have banned the use of malachite green in food animals. According to the Harmful Substances in Food Regulations (Cap. 132AF), all food sold in Hong Kong must not contain malachite green. Offenders are liable to prosecution and, upon conviction, may be fined HK$50,000 and imprisoned for six months.
