The new panel shines with renewed light after restoration work on Diodoro Cossa's majolica ceramic panel. The artwork is once again available to the public in its full splendor, offering a dual viewing experience: by day, illuminated by sunlight, and by night, made even more evocative with the restoration of the lighting system. The Cossa Panel, which illustrates the prestigious history of the Ancient Maritime Republic, marks the completion of the restyling work exactly one year after the restoration of the main facade of Palazzo San Benedetto, an ancient monastery that now serves as the prestigious seat of the Municipality of Amalfi.

Restoration Details

A complex and layered urban regeneration and enhancement intervention that moved from the sea-facing walls to the internal facades overlooking the new Piazza Municipio. This was complemented by the recent installation of glazed ceramic panels donated by artist Clara Garesio along the "Stradone," contributing to the redevelopment of the "gateway to Amalfi," in line with a clear vision for the city. After an initial waterproofing phase, which included restoring the small roof canopy, operations followed for cleaning and removing incoherent deposits caused by salt and seawater, cortical consolidation of all surfaces, and pictorial integration of gaps with cold enamels, completed with a final protective layer. The restoration of the Cossa panel, which dominates Palazzo San Benedetto, was funded with 30,000 euros from the tourist tax, added to an additional 730,000 euros from the municipal budget invested in restoring the facades of the ancient monastery.

Projects

The project is part of a broader effort to enhance the architectural heritage and commemorative monuments of the Ancient Maritime Republic: from the bronze statue of Flavio Gioia and commemorative plaques, to the Porta della Marina, the Galeone Vittoria, the Gonfalons of the Maritime Republic, continuing with the restyling of Palazzo San Benedetto, the new Piazza Municipio, and the Monument to the Fallen. These interventions raise the quality of urban environments for residents and the quality of hospitality, safeguarding the identity of Amalfi's great history so that its extraordinary legacy is not lost. The ceramic panel, created in 1968 by Diodoro Cossa, a student of ceramist Renato Rossi, is inspired by the great deeds of the Ancient Maritime Republic. The upper section reproduces the key phases of the birth of the indomitable queen of the seas, trade with the East, and the role of medieval Amalfi in the Mediterranean. The lower band depicts the construction of Amalfi's most important buildings, such as the cathedral bell tower, the columns of the Chiostro Paradiso, and the marble pulpit with a peacock. Nearby are depicted Cardinal Pietro Capuano bringing the relics of Saint Andrew the Apostle from Constantinople, the sackings and plagues of the 14th century, Flavio Gioia, and handmade paper production. The final scenes represent lemon cultivation and conclude with the auspicious message of a carriage carrying a newlywed couple far away toward a serene future. Through the iconography, the salient features of Amalfi's cultural and commercial tradition emerge, still alive today and making it a global unique, such as handmade bamboo paper and the historic rural landscape of terraces sloping down to the sea.

The restoration work on the facades of Palazzo San Benedetto, transformed in 1578 into a Benedictine monastery and dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity, was conducted under the careful supervision of the Superintendence of Salerno, which approved the restoration project presented by the Municipality of Amalfi.
