It's time to replace modular gray sofas and white walls with layered panels with vintage velvet sofas and hand-painted ceramics: a recently published Pinterest report shows that searches for custom design—pieces with a story, character, and past—are surging.

In this sensual Art Deco-style apartment, the chair is by Milo Baughman, the cocktail table by Willy Rizzo; the rug is from ABC Carpet & Home; the walls and ceiling are painted in Benjamin Moore's Dior Gray. The artworks are by Sarah Lucas.

Decorative Tiles

Blue ceramic tiles are also making waves (with a 470% increase), and searches for "copper bathroom tiles" are up 505%. Kitchen backsplashes with Mexican tiles are gaining ground with a 380% increase, and bathrooms with striped tiles are growing by 447%.

Beige is out of fashion and mass-produced furniture is now outdated, at least according to the Fall 2025 Trends Report.

Platform data reveals that "vintage maximalism" is up 260%, searches for "hand-painted furniture" are up 135%, and Pinterest users are actively looking for pieces that seem to have a story to tell rather than assembly instructions to follow.

What's driving this change? A generation that has realized that buying the same mass-produced furniture as everyone else doesn't create a home. If your living room could belong to anyone, it belongs to no one.

Pinterest's fall forecasts reveal four main trends directing this movement towards individualism, each representing a decisive vote against uniformity.

Art Deco Revival

The 1920s are back. Pinterest users are reclaiming the geometric drama and metallic glamour of the Art Deco era, but filtered through a contemporary sensibility. Searches for "vintage art deco" are up 805%, with Gen Z users particularly drawn to "1920s vintage art deco interior" (up 745%). Searches for "1980s art deco" are also up 509%.

This revival includes integrating the era's signature elements into interiors: velvet sofas with clean geometric lines, brass details, and wallpaper with chevron or sunburst patterns. Pinterest users are searching for Art Deco-inspired pieces in thrift stores, vintage shops, and even contemporary stores, which are creating new pieces with vintage DNA.

We expected this. Already in April we had noticed the impending Art Deco revival: its emphasis on craftsmanship and quality materials makes it perfect for the slow living movement. You buy fewer pieces, but they are built to last and designed to impress.

This 18th-century villa celebrates the rich history of the Spanish island of Minorca. Here, typical Spanish blue and white tiles also cover the cabinets.

The shift towards custom design is especially evident in the tile sector. Pinterest users are embracing bold, character-rich surfaces, with searches for "unique tiles" up 450% and "vintage tiles" growing by 1,107%. The undisputed star? Terracotta, with searches for "terracotta tile texture" up 833%. The appeal likely lies in terracotta's intrinsic imperfection: slight color variations, irregularities in texture, and the mark of human craftsmanship that mass-produced tiles simply cannot replicate.

These tiles highlight visible grout lines, embrace color variations, and prioritize personality over polish. They are part of a broader shift towards appreciating the handmade, the imperfect, and the irreplaceable.

Chic Cubicle

Perhaps the most unexpected trend emerging from Pinterest data is the complete transformation of offices. Searches related to "chic cubicle decor" have skyrocketed by 1,543%, while those for "office makeover" have seen an incredible increase of 2,652%.

The movement embraces everything from inspiration for "luxury offices" (up 2,766%) to designs for "eco-friendly offices" (up 1,065%).

Searches related to corporate office desk decor are up 804%, and "cute desk decor" has seen similar growth. This trend includes everything from ergonomic desk accessories in high-quality materials to personal art collections displayed on temporary walls. Pinterest users share ideas for mobile storage solutions, lighting that counters overly harsh fluorescent light, and ways to incorporate plants and natural textures into corporate environments.

This reflects broader cultural changes regarding the integration of work and personal life and the rejection of corporate sterility. If you spend eight hours a day in a place, according to this logic, it should reflect your personality and promote well-being.

The Secondhand Revolution

Underlying all these trends is the growing popularity of secondhand items, which is redefining how an entire generation approaches home design. The search "dream thrift finds," which increased by 550% among Gen Z, is about finding bargains, but also about discovering pieces with a story and character that new purchases cannot match.
