Editor's Note
This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Tamaulipas Ranchers See Possible Livestock Expor”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.
Despite Tamaulipas reporting 45 active cases of the screwworm pest this week, there is hope that producers may still be able to export live cattle to the United States, according to Cuauhtémoc Amaya García, Undersecretary of Livestock and Forestry Development.
“Considering scenarios with the screwworm, that could give Tamaulipas hope so that when the export window opens, Tamaulipas can enter—states that, even with screwworm cases, have a status of being free from bovine tuberculosis,” he explained.
He noted that while the United States closed its border to Mexican cattle exports due to the screwworm infestation, the possibility of reopening trade with the US hinges on the fact that “the state maintains its sanitary status, free of tuberculosis, and that is being considered by the United States.”
The official stated that given this situation, they have requested a map from the federal government pinpointing the case locations. It clearly shows that 75% of the cases are in the three municipalities bordering San Luis Potosí: Ocampo, Tula, and El Mante.

He maintained that even with this situation, there is a possibility of opening some borders for cattle exports to the United States.
“Although there is no precise date, work is underway on a new protocol considering screwworm cases. That is to say, there is a possibility and hope that Tamaulipas cattle can be exported to the United States,” insisted Amaya García.
Furthermore, he specified that the protocol could bring hope to Tamaulipas. “There isn't a set date yet; they are working on it right now. I hope to communicate tomorrow to get more information, because this is what we have discussed with the ranchers. The good thing is that there is already intention from the United States,” he said.
