Fleurier, Fertile Ground for Watchmaking

Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Fleurier, Fertile Ground for Watchmaking”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

Geneva and the Vallée de Joux had better watch out. An exceptional land of watchmaking has blossomed in the foothills of Neuchâtel. The epicenter is called Fleurier. The municipality has been part of the larger Val-de-Travers entity since the 2009 merger, and it deserves its pin on the map of high-end watchmaking. Watchmaking provides nearly a third of all jobs, and this year a double anniversary is being celebrated: the Parmigiani Fleurier brand and the Chopard L.U.C. manufacture are both blowing out their 30 candles. A perfect pretext for a visit.

Arriving at the station, the eye stumbles upon the imposing "Napoleon's Hat," that wooded mountain that sits like a bicorne on Fleurier's head. A master's house serves as a cockade. It is occupied by Finnish watchmaker Kari Voutilainen, a multi-award-winning maestro and patented entrepreneur. From his lair, he oversees his dial factory Comblémine (in Saint-Sulpice, a neighboring hamlet of Fleurier) and his decoration workshop Brodbeck Guillochage, housed in the watchmaking school that closed in the mid-1980s.
