Designed by architect Nilasha from her eponymous studio, the residence is a tactile exploration of textures, tones, and materials.
Custom-designed for a young couple, the space adopts a discreet palette of whites and soft beiges that highlights its layered textures.
“Our clients dreamed of a Scandinavian aesthetic, where minimalism was championed and the home was based on locally sourced natural materials,” says Nilasha. “By combining these sensibilities, we achieved a unique interpretation of modern Indian life, rooted in functional serenity.”
Wood, sandstone, lime plaster, wicker, and linen define the home’s visual and material identity.
From the moment one enters the Japandi-style home, a sense of peace prevails. A light oak door leads to the foyer, which features a series of wicker elements from ‘The Wicker Story’; a sculptural wall-mounted bench appears like a breeze made tangible, while hanging lamps introduce movement and lightness overhead. With lime-plastered walls and wood panels, the threshold of this Hyderabad home softens the transition between the bustle of the outside world and the inner tranquility.
The lime plaster finish extends throughout the property, wrapping walls and ceilings in perfect harmony.
“In this house, nothing is secondary,” notes Nilasha. “Every element, whether wall, floor, or ceiling, was intentionally chosen to evoke warmth.”
The floor contributes to this vision with sandblasted beige sandstone from Rajasthan, sourced from Stonelife, whose muted grain infuses the space with a quiet elegance.
In the living room, a raw-colored sectional sofa integrates seamlessly with the wall’s tonal palette, accompanied by three warm wooden coffee tables. A broken-white rug adds an additional layer of softness to the space, enhancing the feeling of comfort. A little further, within the same open space, the dining area and bar continue the story of discreet Japandi-style cohesion.
The dining area revolves around a textured black stone table and smooth light-toned chairs that preserve the clarity of the room. Above, a rust-colored linear lamp echoes the length of the table, reinforcing the horizontal rhythm of the space. A two-tone wood slatted screen subtly separates the media room, offering privacy without sacrificing spaciousness. Next to the dining area, the bar takes the form of a simple wood and stone console, with floating shelves to display personal and collectible objects.
“The primary bedroom is a sanctuary within another sanctuary,” states Nilasha.
Fully immersed in wood and earthy tones, the functionality of Scandinavian design is reflected in its clean structure and comfortable furniture.
“We ensured the home’s design language remained consistent, even in the private areas,” she continues.
Custom fluted wood panels clad the walls, while smooth parquet flooring complements a leather-upholstered bed. At the foot of the bed, a pair of gray chairs create a cozy seating nook atop a handwoven rug, adding warmth and texture to the space.
The children’s bedroom presents a more playful version of the Japandi style that defines the home, leaning towards lighter and white tones while simultaneously incorporating whimsical elements that spark the imagination.
“One of the most interesting details we worked on was the child’s room,” recalls Nilasha. “We reimagined the idea of lunar craters in a sculptural ceiling lamp that feels like a perfect extension of the surface.”
Playful touches continue throughout the space, including desk shelves adorned with superhero motifs that infuse personality into the room.
