The Centre Pompidou announced this Wednesday that it has filed a legal complaint after the discovery in mid-January of an "image capture device" in the women's toilets of its administrative offices and states it has suspended the presumed perpetrator.
"The Centre Pompidou has filed a complaint and notified the public prosecutor," a spokesperson for the contemporary art center said in an email. The center is currently closed to the public for renovations, but its administrative buildings remain operational.
According to a message from the management of the Centre Pompidou, also known as Beaubourg, sent to employees on Tuesday, a female employee reported on January 14 the presence of "a concealed image capture device in toilets reserved for women" in the offices housing the building and security management, located in Paris near the Centre Pompidou.
"The presumed perpetrator has been identified and, given the seriousness of the facts, immediately suspended from their duties, as a precautionary measure, to ensure the protection of staff and preserve the proper functioning of the service," the internal communication continued.
“A friend discovered the camera when going to the toilet. Perhaps the images were recorded… We don’t know. There has been no transparency for a month. We need to talk about it, we have all been traumatized by this,” said an employee on Tuesday under condition of anonymity.
Checks carried out in all the building's sanitary facilities ruled out the presence of other image capture devices in these premises, according to the internal message.
In this communication, the management of Beaubourg says it is "aware" that this situation may "raise questions, concerns, and numerous discussions within the teams."
"Please know that we are fully mobilized to guarantee the safety, dignity, and protection of all staff," it assures.
