All the Souls of Ceramic Tiles in This Naples Apartment

Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “All the Souls of Ceramic Tiles in This Naples Ap”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

Textural effects, contemporary graphics, and multicolor patterns. The new horizons of decorated ceramic tiles become the common thread of this apartment in the heart of Naples, designed by the Italo-French studio La Fotosintesi. A hymn to minimalism and the magic of color.

Decorative Ceramic Tiles, Protagonists of an Apartment That is an Ode to the Art of Color

Graphic and geometric motifs, scenic effects, and color vibrations. Decorative ceramic tiles are today one of the most popular themes in interior design. A motif increasingly suited to becoming the protagonist of the domestic scene: from floors, used to visually delimit the various areas of the house; to surface and wall coverings, through Greek key patterns and suggestive optical effects. An evergreen of ornamentation that invaded the pavilions of the last edition of Cersaie 2022 with collections of polyhedral personality.

But not only. Through a rich chromatic range that transforms cement tiles into true all-over decorations, an apartment of about 80 square meters – in the heart of Naples' Spanish Quarters – transforms into a contemporary environment that is an ode to color, thanks to tiles that take on the appearance of Greek key patterns, friezes, and decorations. From classic hexagons to "tozzetti" and mosaic coverings, this apartment becomes the spokesperson for a timeless decorative style. Tiles, cement tiles, and majolica thus become protagonists of the new contemporary way of living. The creators of the project are the Italo-French duo – partners in work and life – Julie and Giuseppe, the young founders of the architecture and design studio La Fotosintesi.

Daylighting: The Art of Furnishing with Light to Give a Natural and Luminous Effect to the Interior

And so, in the vibrant area of the Spanish Quarters – one of the most characteristic places in the city of Naples, made of narrow alleys, clothes hung out to dry in the sun, and small taverns – an apartment on the fifth floor of a historic building stands out, equipped with a terrace with a breathtaking view of the sea and the smiling Vomero hill.

The two young founders of La Fotosintesi studio recount: "When we did the first site visit, we immediately noticed that the various rooms of the house were very narrow, cramped, and dark. Our goal was indeed to open up the space as much as possible towards the outside, so that the sun's rays could enter naturally inside."

A sort of daylighting that ideally transforms the windows into frames that contain and, at the same time, release light.

"We also brought back to life an old skylight that over the years had been covered up by previous renovation works,"

say Julie and Giuseppe.

Light thus becomes the common thread of the entire project which, together with the colors of the decorative ceramic tiles, animates the apartment with bright chromatic touches that, as the two young designers point out, "recall the colors and shades of Naples' historic buildings."

A Design with Vintage Touches Between Contemporary and Picturesque

"The minimalism of the apartment is in stark contrast with the chaotic landscape in which the project itself is set,"

comments the Italo-French couple.

Here, in fact, the vibrant colors of the decorative ceramic tiles, wall coverings, and furnishings reflect the diversity of the facades surrounding the project, where the contemporary plays with the picturesque.

Inside – once past the entrance door – a selection of vintage furniture and more contemporary elements is on display. "The goal is to bring historical pieces back to life in an environment with a modern flavor but with a careful eye on the past."

Among these – to name just a few – is one of the famous paintings by Mimmo Rotella, the Italian artist linked to the Nouveau Réalisme movement and international Pop Art; vintage seating recovered from historic antique dealers in Naples; and "Matita," the essential-design adjustable suspension lamp made by Egoluce.

Today, through a varied design rich in different eras and styles, the apartment in the beating heart of Naples transforms into a bed and breakfast, ready to welcome anyone who wants to experience the true essence of the Neapolitan city.
