35 Kitchen Backsplash Ideas to Inspire Your Aesthetic

Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “35 Kitchen Backsplash Ideas to Inspire Your Aest”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

Personal preference, however, is what matters when it comes to selecting the backsplash for your dream kitchen. "The most popular backsplash for any project will be the one that delights those who live in the space," says Roy Marcus, brand ambassador for Artistic Tile.

Jenni Vetter of Vetter Architects in Milwaukee, winner of the BlueStar kitchen design project, executed this backsplash with hand-cut and placed tiles to create a continuous backsplash wall that adds texture and warmth to the heart of the home. "Filling the wide back wall with tile was an exciting element to commit to," she says.

“The deep olive green tile had been in my inspiration folder for years before the kitchen became a reality.”

Locally sourced in San Francisco, the tile from Heath Ceramics has a beautiful natural color variation that speaks to its artisanal quality. "I knew the color palette was going to be saturated shades of deep green that would contrast wonderfully with BlueStar's range of black and brass."

Stephanie Lindsey, principal designer at Etch Design Group in Austin, used light blue ceramic tile for this kitchen remodel. "The beautiful blue kitchen tiles were displayed in a unique alternating horizontal and vertical pattern. The colored tile against the white cabinets creates a dynamic contrast," says Lindsey.

“The gloss also adds an elegant element to the overall kitchen design.”

The light blue pattern is more traditional and adds the perfect balance to the subtle details of the cabinets and plumbing.

This selection from Artistic Tile, designed by Deb Ingersoll, owner of Virtue Tile, is a visual marvel. "A dynamic pattern like Geotzzo Ribbon adds modern movement to a classic black and white color combination," says Marcus. "The matte black cabinet, with its neat vertical grooves, creates a clean and interesting frame for the adventurous repetition of the backsplash."

Artistic Tile, in collaboration with a design by T.K. Wismer of Department of the Interiors in Louisville, Kentucky, shows that maximalist glamour is very suitable for a backsplash inspired by the legendary Iris Apfel. The Bold Ambition kitchen by Café Appliances employs two striking patterns (one on the backsplash and another on the range hood), Billie Ombre and Hip 2B Square, to harmonize them into a single color scheme: green, black, and gold.

“The repetition of shapes, colors, and materials—squares over squares, bronze over bronze, green over green—makes this space a great example of maximalism in design and shows how strong design can be compatible with everyday life,” says Marcus.

When extending a backsplash from the countertop to the ceiling with a strong pattern, such as Artistic Tile's Alison Rose Euclid, Marcus comments that being diligent with the fixtures is key.

“An oversized brass hood and elegant hardware celebrate the power of the backsplash; although the brass itself is remarkable and powerful, the contrast with Euclid is pleasing, and the two do not compete,” he says.

This sophisticated polished onyx stone, Tiger Lily from Artistic Tile, is undoubtedly enviable. "A simple kitchen design instantly becomes bold and daring with the use of the waterfall island and backsplash," says Marcus. "Wood accents add warmth to the space while allowing the bold orange striping to dominate."

Scalloped Tile Backsplash

For this house in Porto, Portugal, the founders of the Ding Dong architecture studio, Michael Miranda and Davide Gomes, gave a 21st-century touch to the 1930s house by adding a blush-colored scalloped backsplash to give it warmth and a delicious texture. The sea foam green cabinets further enhance the green leopard wallpaper.

A functional space like the kitchen can be a battleground, but that doesn't mean it has to be boring. That's why these kitchen backsplash ideas can add just the right amount of ornamentation and dynamism without overwhelming the room.

“Kitchen backsplashes are a place where you can make a big visual impact,” says Lauren Martin-Moro, founder and creative director of LM Design Associates in Los Angeles.

Kitchen backsplashes are like jewelry: there are countless options for every taste and aesthetic. Dare to add touches of color, like a painted glass tile backsplash, or stick with the timeless classic white tile for a discreet look. Cover only the space behind the cooktop or let the wall tile design extend to the ceiling for a stunning impact.
