[Japan Tokyo] Upcycling Urban Resources into Interior Materials: Takenaka Corporation and ChopValue Japan Launch Joint Research for Circular Economy

Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Upcycling Urban Resources into Interior Material”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

Takenaka Corporation and ChopValue Japan have initiated joint research on the development of recycled building materials using urban waste. The collaboration aims to complete a prototype for practical application in general construction projects by the end of the 2026 fiscal year. ChopValue Manufacturing Japan announced on October 22, 2025, that it has begun joint research with Takenaka Corporation to develop recycled building materials. The initiative will collect disposable chopsticks used in urban areas, recycle them into resources, and study their application as building materials. Through this collaboration, the companies aim to establish a supply chain for recycled building materials in Japan and develop new recycled interior products such as acoustic panels.

Takenaka Corporation has been advancing its "Takenaka Circular Economy" initiative, incorporating resource recycling, waste reduction, and upcycling into its business strategy. Meanwhile, ChopValue Japan, a Canadian social enterprise operating in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, collects used chopsticks from restaurants and other sources through a unique collection network, manufactures upcycled products, and supplies them for furniture and interior applications. To date, it has recycled over 7 million pairs of chopsticks and is planning further global expansion. The joint research will begin in early 2025. Using ChopValue Japan's proprietary micro-factory model, the partners will develop various building materials utilizing urban waste. By transforming urban waste into high-value building materials locally, they aim to demonstrate the feasibility of low-carbon building products. The developed materials will be tested at Takenaka Corporation's research and development facilities for their durability, fire resistance, and construction suitability. The goal of the joint research is to complete a prototype for practical application in general construction projects by the end of the 2026 fiscal year. Subsequently, they plan to proceed with product development and business expansion, aiming to create a new recycled building material value chain in the Japanese construction industry.
