Editor's Note

This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Chulucanas Artisans Travel to Spain to Strengthe”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.

With the goal of boosting the innovation and competitiveness of Piura's ceramics, a delegation of six distinguished artisans from Chulucanas and La Encantada traveled to Valencia to participate in an international internship alongside local ceramists.

The exchange takes place from April 17 to 26, within the framework of the project "Innovating and revaluing traditions to improve the competitiveness of Chulucanas ceramics," known as the Chulucanas Project. This initiative is executed by the Generalitat Valenciana, the Mainel Foundation, FIAD, the University of Piura, the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Mobilitas Training Project, and CITE Chulucanas.

The delegation is composed of Segundo Moncada (Vicús association), Rogger Crisanto (Ñácara), Víctor Sullón (Artesanos de Chulucanas), Rosa Inga (Mujeres Artesanas de Chulucanas), Melissa Inga (Mujeres Artesanas hacia el Mundo), and Walter Chiroque (Ceramistas Tierra Encantada).

During the internship, the artisans will strengthen their technical and creative capacities through the exchange of knowledge with Valencian ceramists. The program includes collaborative workshops, training in 3D printing led by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, as well as cultural visits to spaces such as the National Museum of Ceramics, the Museum of Beneficence, and the exhibition "A media lumbre" at the IVAM.

Furthermore, they will learn about new trends in design and commercialization, as well as opportunities in international markets to improve the competitiveness of local ceramics.

Revaluation of Traditional Art

The Chulucanas Project seeks to train ceramists in technological innovation and good environmental practices, also promoting the transfer of knowledge to new generations. Likewise, it promotes ceramics as a cultural and touristic attraction, highlighting its heritage value. As a precedent, in November 2025, 30 ceramists were trained in digital fabrication and 3D modeling with the support of specialists from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. That same month, a first exchange with artisans from Spain, Italy, and the Dominican Republic took place, consolidating intercultural dialogue. With this internship, the exchange of knowledge continues, betting on modernization without losing the essence of the traditional ceramics of Chulucanas.
