Editor's Note
This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Taiwan’s Annual Marble Production Continues to I”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.
The marble industry in Taiwan does not appear to be in decline, at least judging by the output of raw marble stone. Over the past five years, annual production of raw marble has exceeded 20 million metric tons, reaching 24.07 million metric tons the year before last—the highest in five years.
Marble production in Taiwan is mainly concentrated in Hualien, where the industry once held a 75% market share nationwide. The county is known as the "Hometown of Stone." Currently, the marble industry remains the largest industry in Hualien County.
Taiwan's marble industry has not been able to escape the problem of low-priced Chinese products being dumped. Raw stone can be imported, but semi-finished stone products are strictly prohibited from import. However, customs officials are unable to identify the origin of the stone, leading to Chinese stone products entering Taiwan and causing serious operational crises for stone companies rooted in Taiwan.
In recent years, Hualien's marble industry has been transitioning toward tourism factories and precision applications to effectively differentiate itself from competition with low-priced Chinese products, becoming a distinctive local industry. (Reporter: Ouyang Xiangyi)
