Editor's Note
This editor’s note highlights the key facts and market implications behind “Tile Trend: Getting Started with KitKat Tiles”, with emphasis on sourcing, product fit, fabrication, logistics, or buyer impact.
What are KitKat tiles?
KitKat chocolate is iconic not only for its red wrapper but also for its special shape. The four narrow, long bars have also been renamed by interior stylists as tiles: KitKat tiles. And they look exactly as you imagine: narrow and elongated. Of course, with tiles, it's not just about four pieces; a section or an entire wall is covered with these thin, rectangular tiles. KitKat tiles can be placed both horizontally and vertically. Both variations create a different effect.
In terms of material, KitKat tiles are mostly made of ceramic or porcelain. Other options are not yet available, but that may not last long if the trend continues.
These are the most popular colors within the trend
While the original KitKat is brown, KitKat tiles are available in all kinds of colors. Generally, warm colors are mainly offered: dark blue and dark green seem particularly popular. Beige, black, dusty pink, or sea green are also possible. Even if you love tiles with a print, KitKat tiles are possible for you with these mosaic variants. Plenty of choice!
The advantages and disadvantages of KitKat tiles
The biggest advantage of KitKat tiles for many people is their appearance. The narrow strips radiate something unique and immediately draw attention. Also, if you have a rounded corner in your home, KitKat tiles are ideal; they are easier to lay around curves than larger tiles.
On the other hand, KitKat tiles are harder to keep clean because there are more grout lines than with larger tiles. Especially in the bathroom, a place where tiles regularly get wet, this can be annoying. The price is also generally higher than for square tiles, but more on that later.
KitKat tiles in different rooms in the house
If you like the look of KitKat tiles, you could easily cover your entire house with them. In that respect, these tiles are no different from other ceramic variants: they can get wet and are generally—except for the grout, of course—easy to keep clean. Whether you want to place them in the kitchen, bathroom, or toilet: it's all possible with KitKat tiles.
This is what KitKat tiles cost
You could already read it briefly: KitKat tiles are generally more expensive than 'normal' tiles. That probably has to do with their novelty; because the trend is not that old yet, there are relatively few stores offering the tiles. Prices vary widely per webshop and supplier. Where one shop offers KitKat tiles for €100 per square meter, you can find them at another for €50 per square meter. If you want to be sure of the total cost for installation, it's always wise to request a quote and measure carefully.
